Level confusion is one of the primary strategies that ego uses to keep us mindless, believing that what seems to be outside us could be the cause of what is going on in our minds. Mesmerized by the dream feedback we think is the world and identifying with the dream characters we see in the mirror, we all want to change the dream on the screen of our minds instead of what’s going through our mind’s metaphoric projector. Of course, if we just keep engaging in the attack-defense cycle by reacting to our dream feedback as if it’s what makes us happy – or more often not so happy – then we’re playing right into ego’s dualistic game of projecting our unconscious, mistaken beliefs in sin, guilt and fear onto the world in all it’s myriad forms… and then we’re closing the loop between dream effects feeding back into the mind and becoming the next dream cause, seemingly ad infinitum. We’re confusing form with content, symbol with source, and effect with cause. Yet at any moment, we can break this dream cycle by choosing our Inner Kindness Teacher’s gentle counsel, revealing ego’s silly shenanigans, releasing our mental investment in them, and allowing our Inner Kindness Teacher to replace ego’s interpretation of everything with the curriculum of love – where all events are either expressions of love or calls for love – and both warrant love as the only appropriate response. CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talk about this pervasive ego strategy on her weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio. We also refer to this superb LightHouse article on the FACIM.org website by Dr. Kenneth Wapnick on the subject of Level Confusion.
